TOOLS FOR TEACHERS WORKSHOPS SEPTEMBER- OCTOBER 2009

Fees: All sessions are $40, or $36 (students) each . Two or more participants registering together $36 or $32(students), except for APRENDIENDO A MEDITAR: LOS PRIMEROS PASOS, which is offered in Spanish and is admission free but requires that participants contribute any used clothes to be donated to a charitable institution.

EMPOWERING STUDENTS TO BECOME BETTER LEARNERS

Failure to learn is sometimes the result of not knowing how to learn and not using the right strategies and resources. It can also be the result of limiting beliefs, and the use of negative internal dialogues. In this workshop we will focus on the role of beliefs, expectations, attitudes and language insofar as they facilitate success or prevent it. A student is empowered when he/she learns to use the right resources at the right time.

* APRENDIENDO A MEDITAR: LOS PRIMEROS PASOS

Cientos de libros han sido escritos sobre la meditación, pero nada hay mejor que experimentar aún por escaso tiempo la meditación en si. Este es precisamente el objetivo de este taller, donde se presentan distintas maneras de entrar en un mundo maravilloso a través de técnicas sencillas. Hoy en día, la meditación ha dejado de ser algo misterioso o esotérico, y está considerada como una forma encomiable de aquietar la mente, aliviar el estrés, fortalecer el sistema inmunológico, disminuir la presión arterial, mejorar el ritmo cardiaco, y en general promover el bienestar aparte de paulatinamente favorecer el autoconocimiento. Se dice que la oración es una manera de hablar con Dios, mientras que la meditación es una forma de dejar que Dios hable con nosotros.

• How euphemisms become taboo words
• The multiplicity of uses of four letter words such as f***
• Words and expressions which designate biological processes
• Vulgar/impolite language often heard on TV
• Which words English speakers favour when hurling insults

Participants in this three hour workshop will receive a handout with exercises, an answer key and an annotated bibliography. They will also listen to a recording of a comedian talking about the seven words which you cannot use on the radio or TV.
