ADDING RESOURCES TO YOUR TEACHING

We will examine different ways of getting our students to develop their speaking skills through questioning techniques, simple memory strategies, jigsaws, TPR, rhymes, etc., and we will engage their imagination to make our lessons memorable. We will endeavour to awaken our students’ creativity so that they rediscover the joy of learning. We will use the technique of priming and letter cued recall to get them to compose meaningful texts. This workshop follows the spirit of REALLY PRACTICAL insofar as it presents activities which are easy to implement

Thursday, April 1, 10:00 to 13:00

EXPLORING CREATIVITY IN THE CLASSROOM

We will explore ways to turn activities which are easy to implement into something creative, where students can make contributions of their own so that they can, as it were, translate their individuality through the target language. We will also revise the uses of TPR, dictogloss, letter cued recall exercises and traditional drills to get the most out of them. Throughout, the criteria for the choice of activities will be ease of use, lack of costly devices to put them into practice and maximum linguistic returns.

Thursday, April 1, 14:00 to 17:00

NB. Please note that although both workshops complement one another, they present different techniques. Feel free to choose either option as they are self contained.

B. LANGUAGE DAY: April 2, as above. Self contained sessions

INCREASING YOUR WORD POWER: FOLKS AND THEIR WAYS

We will focus on a number of ways to designate people according to some of their characteristics. For instance, you most certainly know that a couch potato is an individual who spends a lot of time sitting around reading or watching T.V. But what singles out a shutterbug, a rubbernecker, a stool pigeon, a blowhard or a trooper and a trouper? We will concentrate on a number of words commonly heard in American soap operas and sitcoms, not usually included even in advanced language courses.

Friday, April 2, 10:00 to 13:00

WORD PLAY: AN ADVANCED LANGUAGE WORKSHOP

What sort of people are most likely to sashay? What might be the point of sandbagging? Does a bookmaker make books? Does a home wrecker necessarily destroy the furniture in your house? Can you complete the following: (1) He talks a blue….(2) The library is just a hop, a skip and a …..from here. (3) We think very much alike: we are on the same ……

Following the spirit of previous TOOLS FOR TEACHERS language workshops, we will focus on lexical items, turns of phrase and idioms in contemporary English.

Friday, April 2, 14:00 to 17:00

C. INNOVATIONS: April 3, morning only.

TPR REVISITED, TPR EXPANDED

TOTAL PHYSICAL APPROACH (TPR) is associated with commands for the performance of physical actions such as jump, walk, run, etc. and is used fundamentally at the initial stage. In this workshop we will explore a multiplicity of uses to which it can be put, ranging from the traditional ones to vocabulary building, accuracy and precision in written and spoken language, revision of tenses, connectors, etc. at different levels of language proficiency. Furthermore, we will show how this approach can be used to help both teachers and students to look after their health and care for themselves, as when you introduce breathing techniques or stretching exercises, for example.

Saturday, April 3, 10:00 to 13:00

All of the workshops will be conducted by
